Radish Boya Co., Ltd started selling “Green Green-Asparagus” (2008.1.15)

Radish Boya Co., Ltd delivering organic/low agricultural chemicals vegetables and additive-free foods started selling its members “Green Green-Asparagus” with the use of Green Power Certification System. With the System, we can consider 5,000 kWh needed to warm up asparagus during it production period as green power generated by biomass power. It is the first case in Japan that the System has been used for vegetables needed to warm up during its production period.
It is Yamagata Green Power Station located in Murayama City of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan that has produced 5,000 kWh of biomass power. The station is characterized by biomass power which is generated by burning residual woods, such as drift woods.
Details:
* Power generated: 5,000 kWh
* Generation Period: November 1, 2007 to December 20, 2007
* Type of Power: Biomass Power
* Provider of Green Power Certification System: Energy Green Inc.

Feasibility study for 70% CO2 reduction in Japan

As the first article of our blog, I am happy to introduce a recently released report by "2050 Japan Low-Carbon Society" project team. I was encouraged by the outcomes of the study, and I would like to recommend to anyone who is involved in climate change policy, business, or anyone who wants to draw a brighter picture for the future of our children's generation (which is only 20-30 years away from now!).

The title of the report is "Japan Scenarios towards Low-Carbon Society by 2050-Feasibility study for 70% CO2 emission reduction below 1990 leve-". In this report, the team had concluded that Japan has the technological potential to reduce its CO2 emissions by 70% compared to the 1990 level, while satisfying the expected demand for energy services in 2050.

Key conclusions of the report suggest that 70% reduction of CO2 emission can be achieved by 40-45% energy demand reduction and introduction of low-carbon energy supply, with the direct cost of JPY 6.7 - 9.8 trillion, which account for around 1 % of the estimated GDP in 2050.

The team had applied a back-casting approach to examine the strategies for achieving the Low-carbon Society. Some key steps include, 1) qualitative characterization of scenarios with a certain socioeconomic changes through brainstorming by experts, 2) quantitavive estimation of energy-service demand based on the quantified behavior of people and households, design of city and transportation, and industrial structure, 3)calculation of energy services demand and CO2 emission reduction target to explore the appropriate combination of demand and end-use technology, types of energy supply and energy supply technologies, 4) quantify the energy demands and the amount of resulting CO2 emissions.

In order to achieve the Low-Carbon Society goals, the team had called upon prompt actions to be taken at the earliest stage of the roadmap. I hope the report would have a great impact on policy makers and business leaders for accelerating domestic CO2 reductions in Japan.

Climate Change

Is climate changing?

Yes. The climate is changing. The science behind the climate chage has continued to be stressed in the last few years. Scientists are now more certain that the global warming is the reason behind the climate changes. And many people are aware that the global warming is caused by human activities, which have rapidly increased the consentration of GHGs in the atmosphere around the globe. We are also well informed that the consumption of fossil fuels is the main source of GHGs emissions. Given that, the next that we want to know is, how much CO2 we have to reduce to stop the global warming and avoid the serious climate changes?

60% of CO2 reduction in developed nations and 25% world wide are needed.

At the EU summit held in 2005, it was agreed that the global mean temperature should not rise beyond 2 degrees celcius* above the average temperature prevailing before the industrial revolution, to avoid serious impacts on natural ecosystem and human species. This requires the stabilization of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere between 450-550ppm. And this in turn, requires 60% of CO2 emission reduction in developed nations and 25% world wide. Scientists consider this target to be 80% in the long run. Recent studies state or imply that unless we take every possible action, the globe will be reaching the "Point of No return" where climate change would be far beyond our experience.
*The global mean temperature has risen by 0.74 degrees celcius in the last 100 years, and it is expected to rise by 1.1 to 6.4 degrees in the next 100 years.

CO2 emissions keep on rising in Japan.

It is required to make a quick and robust GHGs reductions to save our planet for the next generations. In Japan, governments and industries have been working on GHGs reductions to some extent to achieve Kyoto target of 6% reduction below the 1990 level. However, GHGs emissions have increased to 8% above the 1990 level by 2004. This means that Japan has to reduce GHGs by 14% during the first committment period of 2008-2012. Emission increase by energy use has risen by 13% since 1990. Looking at this increase at sectoral level, industry is the only sector that has reduced the emissions (by -3.2% below 1990 level), and other sectors such as transportation, service, and household have continued to increase by 18.1%, 42.2%, and 34.7% respectively.

CO2 and our life style.

Apart from 40% of total emission by industry, it is clear that the increase in the rest of the sectors is directly associated with our life style. In the household sector, for example, home appliances such as air-conditiones, TVs, computesr, and growing size of refagerators have caused a great increase in electricity consumption (i.e. motive power demand has increased by 36% since 1979). The average household had just 1-2 TV sets in the 1970's, while nowadays we have average of 2-3 sets. Almost half of the households had no air-conditioner in the 1970's, while nowadays we have 2-3 sets on average. We enjoy convenient services at the sacrifice of CO2 emissions. It is therefore necessary that we shift our carbon-intensitve life style to less-intensive one.

→Contact us

1.Consultations on international cooperation projects

Governments, private firms, and NGOs/NPOs as members of international society play important roles in various international cooperation projects in developing countries. There are, eports orunfortunately, projects that do not have any effects and sustainability due to many reasons, while there are ones that have significant effects and sustainability. The Value Frontier provides the following services in a way to assure effects and sustainability of international cooperation projects that are implemented in developing countries.

Planning on sustainable international cooperation projects

To make international cooperation projects effective and sustainable, the Value Frontier provides technical and local know-how at the stage of planning based on information that is obtained from new research results around the world and human network over 80 countries. The Value Frontier also provides at the stage of implementation, on behalf of executing entities, total management of international cooperation projects in a way to assure effects and sustainability.

Evaluation of international cooperation projects

The Value Frontier examines current and future prospect of effects and sustainability of international cooperation projects in developing countries through e.g. mid-term and ex-post evaluation, and then draws practical lessons and recommendations which are useful both in the concerned projects and the planning of similar projects in the future.

2. Climate Change Consultation

Climate change is gaining ever growing global attention in recent years. In the international context, the developed countries are constitutionalizing laws to reduce GHGs through the framework of Kyoto Protocol. Some major studies suggest that the developed countries must reduce their GHGs emissions by more than 50% to avoid serious climatic changes, which is far beyond the Kyoto targets. The Value Frontier provides to promote actions against global warming the following services, in the context of international and domestic projects.

Research on Clean Development Mechanism Projects

In order to ensure the long-term benefit for the host counties of CDM, it is vital to plan and implement projects with high sustainability from the economic, social, and environmental perspectives. It is also important to monitor and evaluate them. The Value Frontier conducts researches on the planning and evaluation of the CDM projects, as well as the related policies and frameworks.

Consultation on GHG (CO2) reduction

The GHG emissions have been increasing in Japan, especially in sectors such as transportation, services, and households. The Value Frontier puts a particular focus on service sector, where there is still a great potential for reduction as a whole.

3. Policy research and translation (English-Japanese/Japanese-English)

The Value Frontier conducts study and reserch for policies related to sustainable development, speicalized in environment and energy economics, water supply and sanitation, integrated water resources management. We also provide translation services for related academic, technical papers.
